Serving God Together.........
Africa Inter-Mennonite Mission has from the beginning been an interchurch, cooperative venture of faith. Working toward unity is part of following Jesus. Unity among believers is part of our witness to the world, as Jesus himself underlined in his prayer:
“I ask… on behalf of those who will believe in me
through their word, that they may all be one. As
you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they
also be in us, so that the world may believe that you
have sent me.” John 17:20-21.
AIMM’s vision and practice of Christian unity has expanded and strengthened over its years of ministry:
- Initially, two American church conferences joined to form the Congo Inland Mission;
- As the work in Congo expanded, CIM attracted other church conferences from the USA and Canada, so that as many as six different North American conferences were collaborating in this common work;
- Today, four African Mennonite conferences join with three North American and one European conference to form a total of eight participating Mennonite conferences from three continents under the Africa Inter-Mennonite Mission umbrella;
- Collaboration has been expanded significantly beyond the Mennonite family beginning in the mid 1970s, when mutual ministry relationships began forming, and continue today, with a number of African Initiated Churches in Botswana and South Africa.
